COVID-19

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It was first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, China, and has since become a global pandemic. COVID-19 spreads through respiratory droplets and close contact with infected individuals. Symptoms range from mild to severe and can include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. While most people recover from COVID-19, the virus can lead to severe illness, hospitalization, and death, particularly in vulnerable populations. Vaccines have been developed to protect against COVID-19, and public health measures such as social distancing, mask-wearing, and hand hygiene continue to be crucial in preventing the spread of the virus. The COVID-19 pandemic has had far-reaching impacts on public health, the economy, and society as a whole, highlighting the importance of global collaboration and a coordinated response to address infectious disease outbreaks.

Covid-19
Variants

A variant of concern (VOC) is a SARS-CoV-2 variant that has been shown to have a degree of global public health significance, such as an increase in transmissibility, virulence, or a decrease in the effectiveness of public health measures. Five VOCs have been identified in Alberta, with the Omicron variant and its subvariants currently the dominant strain.

The WHO provides up-to-date information on COVID-19 variants globally and monitors Variants under Monitoring (VUM) suspected to pose future risks.
